Drug Insurance

With prescription drug coverage, you can reduce the cost of certain medications. Keep in mind that Plan Major acts as a secondary payer for your prescription drug coverage, so you must first submit your claims to RAMQ or another private insurance provider.

It is important to obtain a treatment plan from your treating specialist to confirm coverage for the prescribed procedures, particularly if the cost of the procedures exceeds $200. Certain limitations may apply.

Gender affirmation coverage

Insurance coverage for gender transition and insurance specifically designed to help people transitioning genders cover the costs associated with their transition process.

Eligibility and characteristics

Eligibility and characteristics:

-Medical procedures must be performed in Canada.
-The person must have been diagnosed with persistent gender dysphoria* or gender incongruence**.
-The person must have obtained approval from the public health insurance plan of their province or territory of residence.
-The person must have obtained prior approval from the insurer, accompanied by documents confirming acceptance into the gender affirmation program of their provincial health care plan.
-The person must be covered by the health component of their student health plan.
-Dependents covered by the health component of the plan are eligible for this coverage.

 

*Gender dysphoria is a feeling of significant distress or difficulty functioning related to a person’s persistent feeling that their sex at birth does not match their idea of themselves as male, female, mixed, neutral, or other (gender identity).

 

**Gender incongruence is a marked and persistent incompatibility between a person’s gender identity and the gender assigned at birth, without necessarily causing psychological distress as in the case of gender dysphoria.

Travel accommodations will be covered by the insurer only if gender-affirming medical care is not available in the student’s province or territory of residence.

 

Surgeries and treatments performed to reverse gender-affirming surgery are not covered.

 

Surgeries and treatments not covered by the provincial health insurance plan:
Breast and Chest Surgery 80% of costs, up to $4,000 per type of surgery or treatment
up to $10,000 lifetime
Genital surgeries
Thyroid chondroplasty (Adam’s apple surgery)

HIV-VITP Coverage (New)

Certain unexpected situations require timely access to appropriate care and support. This coverage provides essential protection in cases of HIV exposure or voluntary or involuntary pregnancy termination. It helps cover the costs of consultations and treatments related to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), as well as certain expenses associated with travel or support services required in connection with a pregnancy termination.

HIV Exposure – Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) (Secondary Coverage)

  • Medications (secondary coverage)
  • Consultation and screening test fees (HIV testing)
70% of the costs, up to $500 per year*

Voluntary and Involuntary Pregnancy Termination (Related Non-Medical Access Expenses)

  • Transportation (fuel, parking, taxi, public transit)
  • Companion expenses (if required)
  • Dependent child care expenses (if required)
  • Accommodation (up to 2 nights, maximum $200 per night) if the insured person’s residence is located more than 100 km (one way) from the service provider’s location.

Fracture Insurance

Thanks to the coverage provided by your supplemental student health plan, you may be eligible for reimbursement in the event of a fracture (resulting from an accident).

With Fracture insurance, you can receive up to $1,000 in the event of a fracture resulting from an accident. In addition, benefits are payable in addition to any other insurance held with an insurer or government program.

 

These benefits are not cumulative, and in the event of multiple fractures, the Insurer will pay you the benefit for the fracture entitling you to the highest amount. All claims must be submitted to Plan Major within 30 days of the date of the event. Be sure to send us the claim form along with the other documents required to process the claim.

An accident is defined as an unintentional and unforeseen event caused by an external source. It is important to consult the contract to find out what is covered by accident insurance.

Travel Insurance

With this plan, you’re covered for medical emergencies abroad and trip cancellations, with coverage of up to $5 million.
